2026 Orange Beach Fishing Report: Red Snapper Season, Triggerfish, Beeliners, Amberjack, and What to Expect

If you’re planning a fishing trip in Orange Beach in 2026, here’s the straight answer on what’s going on in federal waters and what families, first-timers, and serious anglers can realistically expect this year.

For federally permitted charter-for-hire boats, red snapper season begins June 1, 2026. The current federal rules allow 2 red snapper per person with a 16-inch minimum length, and the season stays open until the quota is landed. Last year, the federal for-hire season stayed open into mid-September, and if catch rates remain normal and average fish weights stay in line with expectations, many anglers are hopeful for another solid season window. Still, exact closure timing always depends on NOAA landings data, not guesses.

Before red snapper opens, and again after that season closes, we still have good reasons to fish offshore from Orange Beach. Vermilion snapper, better known as beeliners, remain one of the most dependable fish for action and fish to take home, especially for families and guests who want steady catching without needing a full-on red snapper season trip. Gray triggerfish is open through May 31, 2026, then closes for June and July, and is scheduled to reopen on August 1, 2026.

Looking ahead to fall, greater amberjack and gag grouper are both currently structured to open September 1 in federal Gulf waters, subject to quota and in-season management. Amberjack can absolutely be part of summer full-day trips as a catch opportunity, but during the closed portion of the season they must be released. That means they can still add excitement, pull hard, and make a trip memorable, even when they cannot be harvested. Gag grouper has also been managed on a September opening under the current federal system, with the season closing once projected landings reach the target.

One other thing anglers are paying attention to in 2026 is fuel cost. Offshore fishing is fuel-intensive, and temporary spikes in diesel prices affect every charter boat that runs honest offshore trips.
