Every fishing trip tells a story. Some stories become photographs. Others become lifelong memories. We decided to have a little fun and turn some of ours into songs.
Bent Poles and Smiling Faces grew from years of real fishing trips, real families, laughing children, bent fishing poles and days spent aboard Distraction Charters.
I provided the stories and lyrics, a friend helped me work through some chord ideas, and Suno helped arrange and produce the finished music and vocals.
We fish hard every trip because catching fish is why we’re here. But long after the fillets are gone, the stories and memories of the day are what families and friends carry home.
If the song reminds you of a day on the water or makes you smile thinking about one of your own, then it did exactly what we hoped it would do.
A LITTLE MUSIC FROM THE DISTRACTION STORY

When I began running fishing charters in Orange Beach in 2002, I was told a successful trip was measured by the number of fish in the box.
Over the years, I learned that families remember much more than the number of fish they fought.
They remember counting down the days until their vacation. They remember walking down the dock in the early morning. They remember a child looking around the back deck and asking, “Which fishing pole is mine?”
They remember dolphins appearing beside the boat, the first hard tug on the line from beneath the water, and everyone cheering when a fishing pole bends and the fight begins. They remember seeing the first fish they reeled to the top all by themselves.
“Dad, look at my fish! I did it!”
Then come the words every child deserves to hear.
“We’re so proud of you. You did it!”
Those are the moments behind this song. A bent fishing pole may last only a few minutes. The smile and the memory can last a lifetime.
Some of the biggest catches in life aren’t measured in pounds, they’re measured in moments shared between a parent and child.
Fish box is full, we wore these boys out.

But the experience is bigger than the catch. It is learning something new, spending uninterrupted time together, encouraging a child, sharing laughter, and returning to the dock with a story the entire family can tell.
That is what we have worked to create aboard Distraction since 2002, one family at a time.
I am not trying to become a singer or songwriter. These songs started with stories, memories and conversations from my life and years aboard Distraction. I wrote down the words, got a little help working through chord ideas, and used Suno to turn them into something we could listen to and share with friends.
Bent Poles and Smiling Faces is mostly about the people who step aboard. More Than Enough tells a little more about the captain, the road that brought me here, and how my definition of success changed along the way.
